Events

We went to MCRD last week to help stuff bags for the upcoming Boot Camp Challenge event.  Upon completion of our task, everyone enjoyed a good meal (as is the norm for ROTC cadets).  This weekend we will be working as a security detail guarding bikes at the Miramar Air Show.

Well, another year has started.  To anyone who has been checking lately, sorry for not writing a post in a while.  Although the school year has gone forward without any major complications, everyone is keeping very busy.  Our indoctrination went well and this year we have the largest number of freshmen in our unit.  In the entire unit, we have 80 cadets, making us a battalion.  Tomorrow, we have damage control at 32nd street which everyone is looking forward to.  If you would like any more specifics about recent events, go ahead and email me at admin@westviewnjrotc.com.  Expect another post in the next week or so.

Leadership Academy

Hello Everyone,

It’s been a while, but I’m finally writing another post. Today (less than an hour ago), myself and several other cadets got back home from the five day intensive training that took place at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. Each day, cadets woke up at 0500 to complete the days’ physical fitness training, including a test on Thursday. The PT was followed by chow (food) at about 0700 daily, after which cadets would either drill or attend academic classes. Westview’s cadets were spread throughout the five platoons and what each platoon did on any given day would vary. At 0830 every day except Sunday, cadets had themselves and their barracks (bedrooms) inspected meticulously. Beds were made and given “hospital creases”; uniforms were in a particular order and hangers placed exactly an inch apart; undershirts were folded to a 6×6 square, while socks were a 3×4 rectangle; the pillow was flat and measured 8 inches from the top bed post and of course centered. It certainly doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the inspectors (instructors from schools in Area 11) knew exactly what to look for. After inspection, the day would be carried out by attending classes, marching, completing an orienteering course, of survival swimming. The platoons rotated each day.  On Saturday, cadets participated in an all platoon competition for the honor platoon title, which ended up being Michael Petramala’s platoon.  The cadets who attended Leadership Academy this year were Michael Hadley, Michael May, Michael Petramala, Austin Troya, Youngkun Wiess, Matt Rosbrook, Sheridan Martini, and Sara Escobedo who went as a Platoon Leader, being a previous graduate herself.  All in all, it was a great experience despite the sleep deprivation, hurried meals, and aching bodies; everyone was happy to make it through the graduation this morning, and even more so to get home and sleep in a familiar bed.  Hopefully pictures will be made available soon :)

Unit Leadership

Last night was our end of the year potluck.  Everyone had fun chowing down on all sorts of food and playing games.  Toward the end of the night, Commander Jordan announced next year’s top positions.  During the first term, Sara Escobedo will be Commanding Officer, Derrick Caton will be Executive Office, and Michael Cheney will be Operations Officer.  During the second term, Sara Escobedo will become Cadet or Student Naval Science Instructor, Derrick Caton Will become the Commanding Officer, Michael Cheney will become the Executive Officer, and Sadao Darby will be the Operations Officer.  Other positions will be announced during the summer or next school year.

Recent Events

Doug Collins, Michael Cheney, Austin Troya, Kyle CheneyIt’s been a while…things have been slowing down around here though.  Last week we had a community service at Deer Canyon Elementary School.  Quite a few cadets showed up to help run carnival games and control crowds on the inflatable obstacle courses.  We also had several cadets and other  Westview take the ASVAB, a career aptitude test.  Over the weekend was the Miss Poway and Miss Teen Poway Beauty Pageant.  Cadets dressed up in dress blues to present the colors to open the ceremony and later escorted the contestants on stage.  Our “goodbye seniors” potluck will be held in the ROTC room tomorrow.

Today we had an 8-man flag raising at Mt. Carmel High School.  As the cadets passed the flag in a very dignified manner, Erich Allen read Old Glory.  Pictures are posted on the usual page, or you can click on this picture to get there as well.Flag Being Hoisted
